What’s the difference between AR, VR, MR, & XR?
Extended Reality (XR) is an umbrella term that covers all the various forms of computer-altered reality, including Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR).
AR and VR may seem like similar technologies but are fundamentally different. Whereas AR keeps you grounded in the real world with overlaid virtual elements, VR gives you a first-person perspective through various devices, including VR headsets, sensor-equipped gloves, and more.
AR is the enhanced reality with CG overlays, including 3D graphics, animations, videos, text, and soundtracks. Think of Pokémon Go , where the game made it possible to interact with Pikachu in the real world via a smartphone camera – with 100 million downloads on Google Play in one month.
On the other hand, VR is truly immersive. Using a head-mounted display (HMD) or headset, you can experience a computer-generated world of imagery and sounds in which you can move around and manipulate objects.
Further afield, Mixed Reality (MR) is the latest immersive technology that blends real and virtual elements, removing the boundaries in between. That is, physical and digital objects co-exist and can be interacted in real-time. MR pulls virtual and augmented realities together to create an extremely believable and effective interaction.
